• Summer House Santa Monica

Takeout Tuesday - CM Chicken Rockville Pike

I've heard of CM (Choong Man) Chicken before in the general DMV area, but had never been out to try them.  Luckily I heard that there was a Rockville Pike location opening a few weeks ago, so of course I had to order some Korean fried chicken!

For my first takeout visit I decided to get their Soy Chicken - they smelled incredible on my drive home!  Each piece is super crispy and loaded with flavor - the crunch is very addictive!  I received a side of coleslaw with my order which was great to balance out the strong flavor of the chicken.  I can see why people are such big fans of their chicken!  I will definitely be back, especially to try the Tikkudak fried chicken (fried and wood charcoal grilled version), yum!

Takeout Tuesday - Full On Craft Eats & Drinks - Le Pilgrim

 

While I don't really have turkey on Thanksgiving anyway (no one in my family loves it that much, haha), I couldn't pass up this Thanksgiving-themed sandwich from Full on Craft Eats & Drinks because it sounded really good!  Le Pilgrim consists of "Fresh roasted turkey, cranberry relish, mashed potatoes, cornbread and apple stuffing, herb mayo on a French loaf with a side of gravy for dunkin'".  My favorite components were the mashed potatoes and gravy (my favorite side dish for the holidays), but the turkey itself was really tender and delicious too.  It was a deliciously messy meal trying to dunk this packed sandwich into the gravy, haha.  

Due to its popularity they are planning on having this in December as well, but be sure to order early before they sell out!

Takeout Tuesday - Georgetown Cupcake's Pumpkin Cheesecake and Coffee Toffee Cupcakes

I finally made it over to Bethesda to pick up some of the November flavors at Georgetown Cupcake - I've definitely missed these cupcakes!  The store is set up only for online preorders currently, but there is no minimum requirement for the orders, and they can be done as same day orders.  I ordered mine outside the store and was able to pick them up about 15 minutes later.  

The Pumpkin Cheesecake and Coffee Toffee cupcakes are both options that are available on the November menu, in addition to lots of other pumpkin and fall flavors!  The cheesecakes especially are great for anyone that wants something different from their regular cupcakes, with a crumbly graham cracker crust and creamy cheesecake filling.  I'm also a big fan of coffee flavored sweets, so this Coffee Toffee is right up my alley, especially the coffee infused cake.  Be sure to check out Georgetown Cupcake for the delicious November flavors if you like fall and pumpkin flavors!

Takeout Tuesday - Sarah's Handmade Ice Cream Wildwood

The weather might be getting cooler around here, but to me there's never a bad time of year for ice cream! I was so happy to hear that Sarah's Handmade Ice Cream was opening their second location a little closer to me, and of course I had to go check it out on their opening day! 

This new location is bright and airy, with all the necessary precautions in place.  You can see on the back wall of the photo above that there are a lot of flavors to choose from.  I love how they cover both classic and unique flavors so it'll be easy to find something delicious for any taste.  

For my first visit, I ordered two pints - Coffee Oreo and Chippy Chip.  They do take in-person orders, but their online ordering site is very easy to navigate if you want to order ahead and pick up quickly.  Both of these are delicious and have a ton of texture from the mix-ins - so good!

 

I don't believe you can buy this 12 flavor sampler, but I was lucky to win one from posting about their opening weekend on Instagram - this is such a fun way to try a bunch of flavors!  I especially liked this for trying flavors that I wouldn't normally get, like strawberry and salted caramel.  They do offer a sampler in store where you can choose any flavor as 5 kid scoops in a takeout container, which might have to be one of my next orders.  Even though it's colder out, I'll definitely be back to enjoy some more ice cream soon!

Takeout Tuesday - Kiin Imm Thai Rockville Pike

I'm not even sure what was stopping me but I FINALLY tried out a local favorite, Kiin Imm Thai for some delicious takeout!  I wanted to try something besides a meat-centric dish, so I ordered the Godzilla fried rice, Larb tofu salad, and Pad see ew with tofu.  

Everything was really delicious, and as you can tell that the portions are generous!  I have no idea why the Godzilla fried rice has that name haha, but it had lots of seafood and tasted great.  The two tofu dishes might seem repetitive, but the Larb tofu salad had a strong vinegar-y flavor that made it quite different from the noodle dish.  As you might imagine I had these for many meals in the following days, but definitely not complaining since it was all delicious.  Weekend dinners seem to be quite busy for them, which is nice to see during these difficult times.  I will definitely try them again soon, especially since it took me long enough to get over for my first visit!

Takeout Tuesday - Butler's Orchard Farm Market

As the weather has been getting cooler, of course I had to fit in a visit to the Butler's Orchard farm market like I do every year!  While some of their events are modified due to the pandemic, the farm market is still open with proper precautions.  

Of course the main draw for me and a lot of other customers is their cider doughnuts, yum! They freeze great so I had no issue buying a full 6-pack haha.  In addition to these doughnuts, they have pies, pumpkin rolls, and other small baked goods as well.  I also picked up a big bag of Fuji apples which were delicious! I love seeing all the fresh produce as well as the seasonal items they carry in the store - such a great local spot to celebrate fall!

Takeout Tuesday - Call Your Mother Trolley

I haven't had the chance to try out Call Your Mother's original location in DC, but luckily for me they currently have a trolley located in Bethesda, MD!  I have gone a few times and have really enjoyed what I've tried so far.  Online ordering is available in addition to ordering at the trolley, which is great especially on Sundays when they are more crowded.  I've tried a couple of their sandwiches, and they are delicious and packed with lots of fresh ingredients that all work great together.  Their whole menu is very creative - definitely not the standard bagel shop fare which is a nice option!

Takeout Tuesday - Poyoteca's Pollo Saltado

 

I recently had an appointment near the new Poyoteca location, so I thought this was a great chance to go check it out.  This is their second location, and it is located in the Fallsgrove shopping center in the space previously used by Cheeburger Cheeburger.  Although the majority of the dining area is closed currently, it was a nice and open area while going through the ordering line.  

While their big draw seems to be the Peruvian rotisserie chicken meals, I decided to try the Pollo Saltado meal for my first visit.  This was a very generous portion of well-seasoned chicken, vegetables, rice, and steak fries on the side for good measure.  The sauces that came with my meal were also great and a nice way to change up the flavors partway through my lunch.  I'm not in the area much these days but I will definitely keep it in mind for filling and delicious chicken!

Takeout Tuesday - Anh-mazing Viet Kitchen's Cajun Seafood Banh Mi

I recently got takeout from one of the restaurants inside the Block MD, Anh-mazing Viet Kitchen, and I already can't wait to go back for this Banh Mi! This is their Cajun Seafood Banh Mi, but it's not just with any basic seafood.  This one is packed with fried soft shell crab and shrimp, which are two of my favorites!  I will take every opportunity to enjoy soft shell crab, especially fried so it's super crispy.  For the Cajun part - it comes with a delicious and savory Cajun sauce to pour over or dip the sandwich in to.  This packs a lot of flavor and texture, and I highly recommend trying it out especially if you also love seafood, soft shell crab, or Banh Mi!

Takeout Tuesday - Sunday Morning Bakehouse's Pumpkin Pie Twice Baked Croissant

I'm a big fan of pumpkin items, so of course I had to go check out this new pumpkin pie twice baked croissant from Sunday Morning Bakehouse that came out recently!  

It's a big and light croissant filled with pumpkin and cinnamon frangipane, and has so much of that rich pumpkin pie flavor packed inside.  This was perfect with a cold brew coffee and a great way to get some fall flavor appreciation started, haha.  If you also love pumpkin or pumpkin pie, this croissant should definitely be on your list!

Takeout Tuesday - Temari Japanese Cafe's Katsu Curry

 

I am not joking when I say that this takeout container was PACKED to the gills! I recently ordered this Katsu Curry from Temari Japanese Cafe and it was such a yummy treat for a few meals. 

If you've never had Japanese curry before, it's thicker and usually milder than Indian curries, and it's well-known as a nostalgic comfort meal for many Japanese folks.  Add on some crispy pork cutlet slices and you get so much extra texture to the dish.  This dinner order also came with a big salad and miso soup on the side to balance things out a little, haha.  They do a nice job with takeout packaging for something like this - the takeout container was wrapped tightly with plastic wrap to prevent anything from spilling out in transit.  If you've never had Japanese curry before but you're curious to try it out I highly recommend the one from Temari!

Takeout Tuesday - Kuya Ja's Lechon Belly Restaurant

 

At the end of August I had the chance to try out these Honey Pinoy-soy ribs with mango jicama slaw from Kuya Ja's Lechon Belly restaurant - so so delicious!  These were a part of a specific lunch menu for that day, so I am not sure if they normally had this available pre-pandemic.  I've enjoyed their delicious lechon belly dishes before, but this was my first time trying something different.  The ribs were super tender and flavorful, with a really tasty slightly sweet sauce.  Kuya Ja is currently open for takeout (closed Mondays and Tuesdays), and recently opened up their weekend hours to include lunch takeout.  Be sure to check them out for delicious Filipino food if you're in the area!
