Takeout Tuesday - Sumo Mandarins

I'm so happy to see Sumo mandarins back in store, yay!  These big mandarin oranges are always so delicious but are usually only available for a few months.  I saw these boxes during a recent Wegmans shopping trip and also had a coupon for them which was a nice bonus.  These may look a little funky with the gnarled "knot" on top but they are really sweet and worth the price to me for sure.

Hazelnut Spread M&Ms

After checking at a few grocery stores around me recently, I was very happy to come across the new Hazelnut Spread M&Ms at Wegmans over the weekend!  I had heard - and assumed - these would basically be Nutella flavored, but I guess there might be some issue with "unofficially" using their name, haha.  Well, these definitely taste a lot like candy covered Nutella!  They're larger than the plain M&Ms but not quite as big as the peanut M&Ms to me, so there's a good amount of "spread" inside each piece.  I hope these stick around for a while - I think they'd be awesome in baked goods or as an ice cream topping!

Dark Chocolate Oreos

I am always excited to see what new (and sometimes downright odd) flavors that Oreo comes out with, and these Dark Chocolate Oreos are a clear winner for me!

Don't be put off by the fairly "plain" sounding flavor - these have a very rich chocolate flavor, and are really delicious. The dark chocolate creme filling reminds me of a thick chocolate ganache, so anyone that likes chocolate will love these.  While these are great on their own, I could also see them being a great ice cream topping/mix-in, as well as for use in baked goods.  I hope they keep these in the regular rotation!

Wegmans - Pumpkin Cold Brew

In my opinion, the time to celebrate pumpkin and pumpkin spice foods can't come soon enough since Fall always feels so short!  I was happy to see this sign for a pumpkin cold brew coffee at Wegmans yesterday because it's the perfect combination of pumpkin spice flavor + cold drink on a hot day.  Cold brew coffees are also delicious because some regular iced coffees can taste very bitter to me, and cold brew coffee is much smoother.  I am looking forward to trying lots more pumpkin goodies as we actually get into Fall!

Ben & Jerry's Scotchy Scotch Scotch Ice Cream

Who wouldn't love an ice cream based on one of the greatest movies of all time, Anchorman??  I saw this at Wegmans and immediately picked up a pint to try it out.  Anyone that has seen the movie should recognize the name immediately, haha.

I love the Anchorman-themed description on the side, haha

As you can see there's lots of gooey butterscotch swirls throughout the butterscotch ice cream.  As anyone that has had butterscotch before knows, it's very sweet and can be overwhelming at times.  This was just the right amount, especially with the creamy butterscotch ice cream being the majority of the ice cream.  I hope Ben & Jerry's does more movie collaborations like this one!

Reese's Spread

It's always fun and a little dangerous to follow so many food bloggers on Instagram, because they show so many fun new products that are coming out on the market.  I started seeing this Reese's Spread all over the place online, and knew I had to get it ASAP!

Once I found out that it was initially sold at Walmart back in November, I was a little discouraged because I never really shop there.  However, I found one that was conveniently located by the Wegmans I go to, and I had a gift card to use as well, so it all worked out in the end.

As soon as you open this jar you know that it's Reese's.  It has that distinct Reese's peanut butter cup smell and tastes just as good.  It definitely isn't just your regular peanut butter and chocolate mixed together - whatever they did to create this, they did an amazing job!  This spread is great for just about anything you would do with peanut butter or Nutella - definitely try it out if you love Reese's candy!

Oreo Creme Chips Ahoy Cookies

I saw these hybrid Chips Ahoy!/Oreo cookies at Wegmans recently, and of course I picked up a pack!  This flavor was displayed alongside other filled cookies, including the ice cream parlor flavors, so I have a feeling Nabisco brought all of these out around the same time.

It's a little hard to see the Oreo creme filling, but there's a nice even layer of it in the middle of the cookie.  Given that it's a chewy cookie x creme filling, the whole cookie is very soft and doesn't have much in the way of texture.  In terms of flavor though, if you're a fan of the Oreo filling, you will definitely enjoy this different take on a traditional Oreo cookie!

BluePrint Green Juice

These BluePrint juices aren't new, but I have been enjoying them for a while now so I figured I would post about them.  They aren't cheap, but on occasion Whole Foods has had sales on them, and I always make sure to take advantage.  These specific juices were being sampled at Wegmans, and they had a great coupon for these as part of the promotion.

Don't let the color deter you - I find these juices refreshing and really easy to drink.  Now, I've never had these as part of a real cleanse, but I do like drinking them after a heavy meal or as a healthy refreshing drink.  Be sure to try the other juice combinations as well!

Stacy's Gingerbread and Cocoa Pita Chips

I normally only get the Simply Naked flavor of Stacy's pita chips, but as we all know I usually can't resist anything that is limited edition, haha.  Luckily I got these Gingerbread and Cocoa chips right when Wegmans had them on sale so that was a nice little bonus.

The cocoa chips were delicious as expected, but the real surprise for me was the gingerbread chips.  They had this great spicy, full-on gingerbread flavor all around the chips, and it was a really addictive taste.  I hope they bring these back during the holidays again!

Ben & Jerry's Pumpkin Cheesecake Ice Cream

What better way to celebrate Halloween than with something PUMPKIN!?  I had heard about this Pumpkin Cheesecake flavor from Ben & Jerry's recently, but hadn't expected to see it in grocery stores yet. As always, Wegmans managed to surprise me by carrying this flavor in their store, woo!

This ice cream consists of "Pumpkin Cheesecake Ice Cream with a Graham Cracker Swirl", and although the actual ice cream doesn't have as distinct of a graham cracker swirl as the carton illustration, it's still a delicious combination.  This really does taste much creamier than regular pumpkin ice creams as well, and you may notice that the color is very pale compared to some other pumpkin ice creams that are out these days. I thought this ice cream was great and I'm so happy that I got to try it this season!

Wegmans - Germantown, MD Grand Opening

The Germantown, MD Wegmans opened yesterday, and of course I HAD to be there on the first day! The store was PACKED with lots of eager shoppers and the love for Wegmans was everywhere, haha.  Having a store close to work will definitely mean lots of trips there over lunch, which I am really looking forward to.

For anyone that knows/loves Wegmans, you'll hopefully understand my excitement at meeting the man in the photo above - DANNY FREAKIN' WEGMAN, CEO!  As soon as I verified that it was him, I had to ask for a photo, as any Megafan of Wegmans would :o) Welcome to the neighborhood, Wegmans!

Recreating the PNC Park Pittsburgh Sandwich

I recently came across this online article about notable new concessions at ballparks, and instantly fell in love with the idea of Pittsburgh's Pulled Pork and Pierogi Stacker at PNC Park: "This tasty towering treat is a contestant in a Pirates fan poll this season at PNC Park. The stacker consists of pulled pork atop of a pretzel roll with caramelized onions and two potato pierogi for good measure."

As it turns out, I happened to have most of the ingredients for this sandwich.  In my freezer are pretzel rolls from Wegmans, mini pierogies from the grocery store, and my fridge held leftover BBQ brisket from the previous night's dinner.  So, besides the caramelized onions, I was good to go!

Mmmmmmmmm, Pittsburgh!  The idea of potato and cheese pierogies in a sandwich might seem weird to you, but FANTASTIC to me, haha.  The only issue is the brisket- since it was pretty dry on its own, obviously the real sandwich's pulled pork would be a better choice.  Overall though, I loved the idea of recreating a (bastardized) version of ballpark food :o)

Wegmans Cinnamon-Sugar Treats

Hell-oooooooooooooooooooooo, Wegmans.  You were already fabulous as is, but then you had to go and give me these two new (to me) items, didn't ya?

On the left we've got a Wegmans pretzel, which is super tasty normally, but this time with a dusting of cinnamon and sugar on top.  A nice twist on the regular pretzel roll, adding just the right amount of sweetness and crunch on top.  I bought 4 of them and have been trying to keep them in the freezer so I can space out my timing of eating them, ha.  On the right we've got a cinnamon-sugar pumpkin fry cake.  How that is different from a doughnut, I'm not sure...but no matter, this shizz is DELICIOUS!  SO SO SO good, I bought 3 and froze them, have already eaten 2 of them (defrosted, then microwaved for about 20 seconds, good as new), haha.  Both of these items are messy but so worth it- pick some up if you're by a Wegmans!

My 1st Cakewreck Sighting

Nothing says "G.I. Joe" quite like sparkles everywhere.

I never know what I'm going to "discover" at Wegmans, be it pretzel rolls, new kinds of hummus, Ultimate White Cake, etc.  This past trip to Wegmans also brought me something super exciting, in the form of MY FIRST REAL-LIFE CAKEWRECK SIGHTING.

In case you haven't seen it before, Cakewrecks is a hilarious blog that pretty much involves really horrible-looking professional cakes, most of which we can only assume are unintentionally hysterical.  This cake (above) from the Wegmans prepared cakes section stopped S and I dead in our tracks, initially due to its neon ugliness.  This has a number of Cakewreck checkpoints on it, including:

1) The edible paper screenprint (for a movie no one saw)  = lazy cakemaker's dream.
2) The random blob-technique of airbrushing multiple colors around the edges..Camo?  Sorta?
3) Scattered glitter everywhere.

But what really takes the cake (I'm so pun-tastic) is that upon closer inspection, it's apparent that there was a message already inscribed with red frosting on the cake.  Then the cakemaker decided to "erase" the message by spreading insane amounts of glitter all over the message, along the top and bottom of the edible paper.  To top it all off this monstrosity was priced at just under $30.00.  WHO WOULD BUY THIS?!  I mean except maybe me, if it was $5 and any of my friends' birthday was coming up, haha.

Wegmans, I know your cake department can (and normally does) do better than this.  That being said, if anyone was going to bring me the joy of my first Cakewreck sighting, I'm glad it was you.

Wegmans' Mini Ultimate White Cake

3 tiers of delicious.

On my last trip to Wegmans, I was disappointed that another attempt at sampling their Ultimate White Cake was foiled- I get e-newsletters from them all the time advertising samples of this cake, but usually during the week apparently.  However, I found the cake in a mini form for $6.00 and decided it was worth trying out, after all the self-imposed hype about it.

The first rule of the Ultimate White Cake is to read the label and let it come to room temperature.  Otherwise you will literally feel like you're eating cold cake with cold butter on top, which is about as appetizing as it sounds.  But once you let it come to room temperature, it's all sorts of vanilla-y creamy richness.  The mini cake is a perfect size for a small dinner party or for a few friends to try it out.  It would be a nice item to bring to someone's house also, if you aren't a baker and wanted to bring a little something sweet.  Looks-wise it also reminded me of a wedding cake (by that I mean 1) It's white; and 2) It's tiered) and thought it would be cute to put at each table if you were having an informal wedding reception, haha.  I couldn't eat this cake all the time since the frosting is v. rich and thick, but I am definitely glad I tried it and would recommend trying this out!

Review: Wegmans' Marco Polo Bread

Trying to avoid buying bread after walking through the Wegmans bread section is pretty much impossible. Between the smell, the pretty cakes, the free samples, and the feeling of being virtually surrounded by baked goods, it will pretty much destroy anyone's determination.

Marco! Polo! Bread-o! (it had to be said).

Since I already have sandwich bread at home, I decided I'd try something different out. And hi, what could be more "different" than a bulbous crown-shaped bread that has a crackling rice flour shell on top, that's called MARCO POLO bread?!

Once I got home, I cut a small wedge of the bread and tried a few bites plain, then with the peanut butter I also bought. The crackly rice flour crust (or at least that's what I think the label said it was) doesn't taste much like anything, but provides an interesting texture that is different from a normal bread crust. The bread innards were fluffy but chewy, a nice neutral base for the peanut butter. I cut up the rest of the bread, wrapped them in plastic wrap, and froze them in a Ziploc bag. So far, so good. They defrost well and I haven't had problems with staleness yet.

Final verdict? An interesting bread to look at, but if you're expecting it to taste different/better than regular bread, you may be slightly disappointed. I've heard issues of the bread going stale pretty quickly, especially with the already crunchy crust, so I would recommend the storage method I wrote about above if you don't plan on serving it to a large family or at a party the day you buy it. I like this bread, it would go great with soup, mussels, stew, basically anything that could be sopped up with large chunks of this bread. If you're interested in trying it, I'd recommend getting the mini version, like I did- it comes in Mini and Regular sizes. The Mini was $2.75, not sure how much the Regular version is.

Love, Love, Love: Wegmans!

Wegmans came into my life sometime during high school, when one opened up by my house to great fanfare. It's since become THE grocery store chain that can never be beat, #1 in my heart cus it is so so AMAZING.
Up until this past weekend, the only time I could go to a Wegmans was when I was home, or somewhere else in the NY/PA/NJ area. However, S and I braved the ever-annoying-always-crowded-I-hate-you-66 to go to the Fairfax Wegmans, and I am soooooooooooo happy we did.
Some highlights:

$1.50 for decent pasta sauce! Woo!

$2.79 for a yummy natural pb! Ingredients: Peanuts! Woo!

Plus, the bakery cookies are deeeeeelicious (got chocolate chip and swiss chocolate cookies on my visit), free samples are a plenty around the store, there's a seafood and regular bar/counter seating for "real" dining plus the food court area with comfy couches, and sooooooo much more. Sighhhhhhhhhhhhh. Can't wait to go back again soon!
